How to use the square yards area calculator?
Please follow this short set of instructions on how to get your answer!
- Start by selecting the type of space you want to calculate the area for. The default is for rectangular spaces, but you can choose from other shapes such as square or triangular spaces. Click the button to see a drop-down menu of available shape options.
- Pick the shape of the space. You can choose from:
- Rectangular space - just enter the length and width of the area.
- Square space - simply enter the side length of the area.
- Triangular space - you'll need the base and height of the triangle to calculate the area.
- Other — if your shape doesn't fall into one of the categories above, choose this option and enter the necessary dimensions.
Depending on the shape, you will be asked to provide specific information such as the length and width for a rectangular space, side length for a square space, or base and height for a triangle. In some cases, we might also ask for additional dimensions if the shape is more complex.
Provide the calculator with the number of spaces you want to calculate. The default is set to 1, but you can change this number if you need to calculate the area for multiple spaces at once!
How to calculate area in square yards?
Even though our square yards area calculator may seem complex at first glance, it operates on a very simple formula. The basic principle of calculating area in square yards is:
area = length × width
Once the area is calculated in square feet, simply convert it to square yards by dividing by 9:
area in square yards = area in square feet ÷ 9
If you're working with a square, the formula becomes:
area in square yards = (side length × side length) ÷ 9
For a triangle, the area is calculated using the formula:
area = ½ × base × height
After calculating the area in square feet, simply divide by 9 to convert to square yards.
The tricky part may come when calculating the area of irregular shapes, but don’t worry! You can find all the necessary formulas and tips for working with different shapes in our 3D geometry calculators section.
Example
Calculating the Area in Square Yards
The area of spaces can be calculated in square yards by first finding the area in square feet and then converting it. The general formula to calculate the area in square yards is:
\[ \text{Area in square yards} = \frac{\text{Area in square feet}}{9} \]To find the area in square feet, you can multiply the length and width of a rectangular or square space. If the shape is triangular, you can use the formula for the area of a triangle.
Calculating the Area of a Rectangular Space in Square Yards
If you have a rectangular space, you can calculate its area by multiplying its length and width, then converting it to square yards. The formula for the area in square feet is:
\[ A = \text{Length} \times \text{Width} \]After calculating the area in square feet, convert it to square yards using:
\[ \text{Area in square yards} = \frac{\text{Area in square feet}}{9} \]Example:
If the space has the following dimensions: Length = 12 feet, Width = 9 feet, the area can be calculated as follows:
- Step 1: Calculate the area in square feet: \( A = 12 \, \text{ft} \times 9 \, \text{ft} = 108 \, \text{sq ft} \).
- Step 2: Convert the area to square yards: \( \text{Area in square yards} = \frac{108}{9} = 12 \, \text{sq yards} \).
Calculating the Area of a Square Space in Square Yards
If you have a square space, you can calculate its area by squaring the side length and then converting it to square yards. The formula for the area in square feet is:
\[ A = \text{Side}^2 \]After calculating the area in square feet, convert it to square yards:
\[ \text{Area in square yards} = \frac{\text{Area in square feet}}{9} \]Example:
If the side length is 10 feet, the area can be calculated as follows:
- Step 1: Calculate the area in square feet: \( A = 10^2 = 100 \, \text{sq ft} \).
- Step 2: Convert the area to square yards: \( \text{Area in square yards} = \frac{100}{9} \approx 11.11 \, \text{sq yards} \).
Real-life Applications of Square Yards Calculation
Calculating area in square yards has many practical applications, such as:
- Determining the amount of flooring material needed for a room.
- Estimating the area of land for landscaping or construction projects.
- Calculating the amount of turf or sod required for a garden or field.
Common Operations with Square Yards Calculation
Rectangular Area: \( \text{Area in square yards} = \frac{\text{Length} \times \text{Width}}{9} \)
Square Area: \( \text{Area in square yards} = \frac{\text{Side}^2}{9} \)
Triangular Area: For triangular spaces, the formula is \( \text{Area} = \frac{1}{2} \times \text{Base} \times \text{Height} \), and then convert it to square yards.
Object Type | Description | Steps to Calculate Area | Example |
---|---|---|---|
Rectangular Area | Finding the area of a rectangular space by multiplying its length and width, then converting the result to square yards. |
|
If the dimensions are Length = 12 feet and Width = 9 feet, the area is \( 12 \times 9 = 108 \, \text{sq ft} \), and the area in square yards is \( \frac{108}{9} = 12 \, \text{sq yards} \). |
Square Area | Finding the area of a square space by squaring the side length, then converting the result to square yards. |
|
If the side length is 10 feet, the area is \( 10^2 = 100 \, \text{sq ft} \), and the area in square yards is \( \frac{100}{9} \approx 11.11 \, \text{sq yards} \). |
Triangular Area | Finding the area of a triangular space by using the formula for the area of a triangle, then converting the result to square yards. |
|
If the base is 8 feet and the height is 5 feet, the area is \( \frac{1}{2} \times 8 \times 5 = 20 \, \text{sq ft} \), and the area in square yards is \( \frac{20}{9} \approx 2.22 \, \text{sq yards} \). |
Real-life Applications | Applying square yards calculations to solve practical problems, such as estimating flooring or landscaping needs. |
|
If you need flooring for a room that is 180 square feet, the area in square yards is \( \frac{180}{9} = 20 \, \text{sq yards} \). |
